Dimensions

Pendant height: 1.8 Inches; Pendant width: 0.83 Inches

This pendant features a hand-cut cabochon of Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG), a man-made synthetic crystal grown for use in lasers. The stone weighs in at 45 carats and is set in sterling silver.

We almost never use synthetic stones in our jewelry, but we will occasionally make exceptions when a synthetic stone does something that no natural gem does. This material, chromium-doped YAG, is one such gem. It has a rich green base color, but also such rich red fluorescence that, depending on the angle it is viewed at and the light source it can look partially or entirely red. This is a very striking and unusual feature. Normally this material is used in lasing rods for lasers, and imperfect crystals are ground up and reprocessed, but we were lucky enough to make a connection with an industrial crystal grower and got a few of their offcast boules.

This cab is a bit thin, so in most lighting conditions it just shows a rich green color. However when the light hits it right and the red color shows up it is a really striking effect. I may be a jeweler at heart, but I am trained as a scientist and there's just something viscerally nice about laser crystals.
