Our family starter, affectionately named “Bodie,” has been lovingly nurtured for over 70 years by my 92-year-old mom, Patricia — a retired schoolteacher with a passion for homemade bread.

She originally purchased Bodie from a famous San Francisco bakery in 1951, while traveling with my father, a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral. The baker shared that their starter had been in use since 1850, and had already been in the founder’s family since 1790 — giving Bodie more than 230 years of sourdough history.

Since that day, Mom has fed and cared for Bodie daily, keeping it active, healthy, and happy. It’s created countless loaves of crusty artisan bread, fluffy pancakes, crispy pizza dough, and golden cookies throughout our lives.
