About This Image:

Theories of Flight - Pelicans is one of a series of 12 images born out a recurring theme in my work the last few years. The idea, metaphorically, of flight. Flight as freedom, flight as imagination, flight as a desire and a transformation. Most importantly, flight as a means of living true within oneself.

From the time we are children, we look to the skies and the stars and dream of the flight of birds. That feeling, that freedom to soar. We wish upon stars and we dream of the spaces beyond our world.

Since the dawning of civilization, we have tried to set down the plan and create the ability of flight. It is found in cave drawings, mythologies, charcoal sketches, mathematical equations and modern blueprints. But these lack the pure magic. . .

We are also surrounded by these modern structures that are attempting to reach the skies. Spires and towers of all sorts penetrating the horizon and the great blue.

We attempt to get "closer" in these ways too.

But, to me, the architecture of such things only serves to create a feeling of being bound here. Reminders of the lack of our ability to fly.

I think the answers lie in dreams. In imagination. In living a life that is TRUE to your soul. True to what creates the feeling of flight in you.

And I am certain that every person has wished for the power and magic of flight while watching a bird soar above their head. . . and I am just as certain that not one single bird has ever looked down at us and wished to be what it cannot be. . . not even for a second.

Theories of Flight - Pelicans

We dread the circular motion of our lives
Going in circles
Backtracking
Returning
The end is the beginning
But we want to think of life as linear
Moving forward in some way
We name it progress
We acquire
Gain

The circular motion of flight, however
Is a constant writing in the sky
Repeated like a mantra
Telling us that, in doing things this way,
We are, quite simply
Lost
