Item details

Height: 1.75 Inches; Width: 4.75 Inches

Carved from a small burl taken from a fallen maple tree, the interior of this bowl displays splashes of color in random shapes and intricately convoluted grain patterns. Burl wood is known for its swirling and "randomized" grain, and this piece is particularly remarkable in the fineness of that grain. It's a piece you can hold in your hands at meditative moments and see tinier and tinier details as you peer into it, to the very limits of human vision. The outside has its own beauty, being dark, rough, and quite randomly knobbly. Because burls are naturally bowl-shaped, the entire outside of this bowl, except for the flattening of the bottom, has no manmade cuts or shaping. And because this bowl is carved rather than turned on a lathe, the inside of it also follows the natural, asymmetrical shape of the burl. The result is an object that comes almost directly from the creative forces of nature to your hands. My humble role as a craftsman was merely to uncover its inherent beauty. This bowl is finished with polyurethane and a tung oil varnish.

About 4-3/4 inches (12 cm) in diameter and 1-3/4 inches (4.5 cm) high. It could be used to hold candies or any other small items, or kept empty to better display its beauty. In any case, it's sure to be a source of joy and wonderment to everyone who sees it.
