This is a reproduction of the type of shawl used for centuries. I have titled it as Civil War, but it really could be used in a number of period settings. It is a large square 53"x53". The square shape was very practical. It was most often folded into a triangle and used as a shawl, but the square shape allowed for many other uses, such as a lap robe, or wrapping a baby, or a handy changing station. When doubled into a triangle, the layers gave it added warmth, also creating a very attractive double layer of fringe. The overall size drapes a period dress very prettily.
This is of a nice, medium weight wool. The plaid is predominately red and white with narrow bands of dark blue, yellow and green. It is trimmed all the way around with black polyester 4" fringe. Silk or cotton fringe would have been used at that time, but today's costs are prohibitive. I wanted to keep this affordable. If you don't tell, probably no one will notice.:) There are almost 7 yards of fringe here.
When I made the square of the shawl, I found I had 18" of wool left and just enough fringe to make a matching scarf. Fabric came very dear in those days (not so different from today), and a thrifty housewife would certainly have made use of any leftovers, just as I did. So, in addition to this lovely shawl, you will get a nice matching scarf for your husband or child. It measures 18"x53" with the 4" fringe at each end.
All edges have a rolled hem, sewn separately before the fringe was added. You'll get no raveling here! And of course, straight stitch only-- zig zag was not invented yet.

Wool- Dry Clean Only! However, I think a little rain at an event wouldn't hurt it.
