Now you can pick and choose your own custom set of atomic Art Deco Salem Streamline / Tricorne Dinnerware! We've acquired a large collection of these iconic vintage dishes in Mandarin Orange and white, and would love to help you pick out the pieces that would best serve you.

Part of the LA County Museum of Art's Art Deco collection, this fabulous 1930's pattern features crisp white triangular ceramic dishes bordered in bright orange, and was featured in the Washington Post's 2012 "Mad Men Look" interior design contest; one of our customers won 1st place, and our Luncheon set for 4 was featured in several of the photos!

You can choose a set for a particular number of people or just tell us what you’d like to spend and which pieces in your preferred condition grade you'd like; in collaboration with you, we will create a set exactly to your specifications, pulling from the pieces listed below. Mandarin Orange is our most plentiful pattern, but please inquire if you're interested in a different Salem pattern, we actively collect several!

What would best serve your needs? An intimate set for 2? A luncheon set for 4? How about a wedding service for 12 or 24?

Once we've designed your perfect set, we post a custom listing, which you then purchase. If you've added this listing to your cart and paid the $90, we treat it as a deposit, and deduct it from your final listing price. If you prefer, we offer Layaway payment plans and can split your payments into several installments; just see our Policies section or ask for details.

We also offer a discount for items reserved for your Wedding Registry; please inquire for more info.

We now price Mandarin Orange (and other Salem patterns) in several tiers according to variations in condition; for example, the 6-piece place setting featured in the first photo [Dinner plate, Bread Plate, Berry Bowl, Nut or Condiment Bowl, Cup & Saucer] is in Grade B 'Great-to-Good' vintage condition and is priced at $90; the same 6-piece place setting in Grade A 'Excellent-to-Great' vintage condition is $125.

This pattern is anywhere from 80-50 years old, and as such, is best used only for special occasions.

Manufacturing flaws or irregularities are rare in every grade, but crazing (crackling of the clear overglaze) and underside kiln marks are very common.

A = Excellent-to-Great: Very little wear or signs of use, may include a spot or 2, light crazing &/or utensil marks. No visible chips, cracks, nicks, etc.

A- = Excellently Good! A tish better than Grade B; could have no crazing, but enough faint discoloration on the orange to push it beyond a Grade A, has moderate crazing, but the orange is almost perfect, maybe with an extra spot. Any chip, if present, is on the underside, buffed smooth and barely perceptible, if visible at all.

B = Great-to-Good: Light-to-moderate signs of wear can include utensil marks, spots of missing orange glaze (especially on cup handles) and/or occasional spots of discoloration; expect overall crazing. Any small nicks or chips (often underneath a plate corner) are buffed and/or painted to minimize and/or conceal their visibility.

C = Good-to-Poor, aka "Craft" grade: Can include all of the above plus heavier discoloration and more chips (buffed, painted over or otherwise). A hairline crack is rare, but possible.

D = Damaged, Display Only: Items in this grade are generally of excellent appearance, but have an unobtrusive flaw--usually a crack--which renders them unsuitable for use. Prices are discounted 50% or more as a result.

We're committed to honest business principles and will describe all flaws to the very best of our abilities. We're also happy to provide a condition report with additional photos upon request, just provide us with your direct email address.

It's tempting to stack the cups on top of each other, but this will eventually wear a spot through the glaze on the handle. As with any vintage dinnerware (or with metallic embellishment; in this case, makers marks stamped on bottom in platinum or gold ink), these pieces should not be used in microwaves, and we strongly recommend hand washing as soon as possible after use. If a piece has crazing on its inner surface, avoid staining by restricting contact with acidic or deeply colored liquids & foods (strong coffee, tea, beets, etc). Please contact us for cleaning instructions should your ceramic dinnerware become stained.

Please Note: Vintage and antique dishes were often decorated with glazes containing varying degrees of toxic substances, like lead or cadmium. If you have a concern, please research before purchasing. To minimize exposure to lead or other toxic substances when using vintage dinnerware, please observe the following precautions: use infrequently; do not expose to high heat, including microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers; avoid contact with acidic foods & liquids, especially if cracked or crazed (slight crackling of the clear overglaze); do not use to store food or liquids; wash by hand soon after use and allow to air dry.

Atomic, futuristic, the epitome of 1930's glamour, the Salem China Company's Streamline & Tricorne dinnerware shapes (created by Don & Viktor Schreckengost, Herbert Smith & Vincent Broomhall) smashed into the well-ordered design world of line and curve with Jetson-like conical cups & hollowware sporting sharply angular handles; triangular plates, saucers, and bowls.

They were an instant Depression-era hit in "Movie Night" giveaways aimed at getting housewives into the theaters; see Susabella's blog for more info:

Salem produced a variety of designs and color patterns for their distinctive atomic & mid century shapes like Streamline, Tricorne, Saphire (sic) and Century, and we actively collect all we can find to fulfill our intention to provide the most comprehensive collection of this unique Art Deco dinnerware available online. We always have more on hand than is listed, so contact us if you're looking for something specific, and see our Atomic Salem Dinnerware section for current listings:

These Atomic Art Deco plates are just gorgeous. They are even lovelier in person. I'm so delighted with this purchase. They came intact because they were impeccably packaged. They were exactly as promised. The shop offers the opportunity to cherry pick a set for yourself at a level you can afford. It's incredibly flexible. The shop owner is willing to work with you, and is warm and personal. This is a big A+ transaction for me. I will be returning as a customer.
