This is an Adler No. 7 antique manual typewriter in excellent condition. This machine had been restored and is in working condition.
The Adler Company first began making typewriters, bicycles, and motorized vehicles in late 19th century Germany. The company later merged with Triumph to form the TZ Triumph-Adler AG company. The company's first typewriter was the Empire and was introduced in 1898. This machine featured a push-rod mechanism with typebars laying horizontally. When the user struck a key, the machine thrust the typebar forward. This was a significantly different design from other typewriters of the time which mostly used an upstroke or downstroke action.
The Empire model was soon replaced by the No. 7, of which this machine is an example. The N0. 7 added additional features but retained the core push-rod style of the EMpire. Adler went on to produce the No. 7 and its variants until the early 1930s. This particular example comes from the early 1920s and is an excellent specimen.
Like all my machines I have restored, repaired, adjusted, and lubricated this typewriter. It has a newly installed ribbon, is in working condition, and is ready-to-use as soon as you get it home.
**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this Adler No. 7 is in excellent condition. This typewriter is unmistakably antique and is one of the more unique antique typewriters you'll come across. The gloss black paint retains much of its original luster. Most of the keys are ringed with black bakelite protectors, while a few have nickel rims. The bare metal mechanical and control features show some aging and patina, but those only add to the charm and beauty of this machine's striking appearance.
The look and typing action of these early Adlers is unmistakable, and a thing of beauty. These machines originate from a time when typewriter designers were still trying to decide what methods of keyboard layout, typebar configuration, and basic design were best. Though the Adler design later lost out to the front-strike machine design that became the norm, they are all the more unique because of it. There's nothing quite like using an antique design that has long ago faded into history, and this Adler is a perfect example of a forgotten, yet working, relic from the age of machinery.
**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
Mechanically, this Adler is in very good condition. The machine types well, though not exactly easily or intuitively with its three banks of keys with three different symbols on each. Also, the German-style QWERTZ keyboard layout can take some getting used to for those used to a QWERTY layout.
Nevertheless, this Adler types well and confidently. The platen has hardened and will leave indents or occasional cutouts, and the "1" key has worn down some and doesn't always leave a clean "1" on the page when you type. Other than that, the mechanical elements of this antique Adler are all working as they should.

**RECOMMENDED EXTRAS**
All of my reconditioned typewriters are ready-to-use as soon as you get them home, but there are add-on items that can make use and care for your machine easier. I have several accessories in stock specifically for this purpose.
You can include any of these extras with your purchase by selecting the appropriate option from the scroll-down menu when you purchase.
**Typewriter Pad**
A typewriter pad is a piece of fabric designed to do two things: lessen the sound of your machine by limiting vibrations that travel from the typewriter through the desk or typing surface, and keep the typewriter from moving around on the typing surface--sometimes called "walking"--as you type and move the carriage.
My typewriter pad is designed to address both of these issues. The pad features a ribbed non-woven fabric top and a rubberized bottom. This allows the pad to both limit vibrations and keeps your typewriter in place both by gripping the machine's feet and the typing surface at the same time.
I always recommend a typewriter pad for all machines, but especially if you're interested in a small portable, or intend to use your machine for heavy writing purposes.
**Typewriter Care and Cleaning Kit**
A typewriter is a machine, and all machines need maintenance. My typewriter care and cleaning kit is designed to allow you to keep your machine in as good a shape for as long as possible. It includes tools such as high-grade machine oil, typewriter brushes, and a cleaning cloth along with a brief guide to guide you on how to keep your machine in good shape.
If you intend to use your machine for anything beyond display purposes, having the care kit around is something I always recommend.
**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
The Adler No. 7 is one of the more visually distinctive and unique antique typewriters around. These machines are unmistakeably antique. They encapsulate a bygone time and understanding of how we interact with machines and are works of mechanical art.
This typewriter is ideal for a collector who wants an antique Adler in excellent condition, a designer who needs a visual standout piece, or a writer who wants a time machine. There's something distinct and special about typing on machines like this and is an experience you cannot replicate. This Adler No. 7 deserves a place in a hoke or workplace where it will be cherished.
Thank you, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.
