This Captain John Smith medal commemorating the founding of Jamestown is 3rd in the series, The Official History of Colonial America by the Franklin Mint. The collection started in 1976 and was meant to commemorate the Bicentennial of the 13 original states. The entire set contains 50 medals along with an information card for each.

Each medal in the collection has a picture on the front and a brief history on the back. Around the rim it reads, “The Official History of Colonial America” on the top rim, and the bottom rim reads, “Fine Pewter” copyright symbol, the Franklin Mint Hallmark, and the year it was minted.

The 3rd medal in the series minted in 1976, honors Captain John Smith for his leadership over Jamestown's first years as a new colony.

It measures 2” (5.1cm) in diameter and is made of fine pewter.

This medal pictures John Smith & other settlers preparing the land for building and farming. The back gives a brief synopsis of Smith & Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the New World.

The medal is in pristine condition and is still in its original sealed card. The card is showing slight signs of wear along the edges.

This medal has 2 information cards which read exactly the same. (For some reason they sent duplicates with some medals.) The information cards go into a bit more detail on the topic of the medal with the history on both sides. These cards measure 7 1/4" x 3 1/2” (18.4cm x 8.9cm). Both of these are in very good to excellent condition.

My mom was fascinated with, and loved items regarding Colonial America. This collection, a surprise to me, is yet one more (well…50 more) of many Colonial America items she had. I had no idea this collection even existed – I found these in her attic.

These medals are wonderful collectibles that any history buff would love. We have many of the medals from this collection that can be viewed here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/4GetMeNotTreasures/search?search_query=colonial+america+franklin+mint
