This is a hand made rubbing of a very unusual engraving of Saint George on horseback, spearing the dragon, his shield bearing a cross. This is the cross of St. George, a red cross on a white field, which formed the flag of England and is incorporated in the Union Jack; created here using metallic gold wax crayon on a special black rag paper.Saint George became patron saint of England and several other countries. The Order of the Garter, founded about 1347 is under his patronage. The facsimilie brass size is 9 1/2" X 9 1/2" and the paper size is 12" X 15" to allow plenty of room for matting and framimg. This plate is a portion of a memorial brass laid down in Elsing in the county of Norfolk, England for Sir Hugh Hastings who was Steward to Edward III's Queen Philippa.
