This beautiful, hand-tinted holiday postcard shows a view of the promenade at La Baule, Loire-Atlantique (known as the Loire-Inférieure until 1957), France.

The postcard has evidently been removed from a book of postcards - hence the perforations on the left edge of the postcard. It is in near perfect condition and is unused.

I believe the postcard dates from the first quarter of the 20th century. It was produced by F. Chapeau of 38, Bd Eugène-Orieux, Nantes. The process of hand-tinting was very labour intensive. It was usually done by a production line of women, each responsible for a different colour. The lead paints used were toxic and some women became ill as a result of the work, so, not surprisingly, the technique did not last long. However, some of the results produced were works of art - as this postcard shows.

The card measures 5½ by 3½ inches (14 x 8.8 cm).
