Valerian Root is proven to be effective in relieving anxiety and insomnia in humans. Valerian root on your cats' toys will have the same effect as catnip...sprinkle some dried on their toys and watch them get excited!

Perennial - Zones 4 to 9

* Seeds per package - 25
* Bloom Time - June to July
* Bloom Color - White fading to pink
* Size - Up to 4' tall x 2' wide
* Culture - Full sun to light shade.
* Characteristics - Valeriana officinalis is a clumping perennial with scented leaves, stems, flowers and roots. It is native to Europe and western Asia, but has escaped gardens and locally naturalized in the northern U. S. and Canada. It typically grows in damp locations, but also can be found in drier soils. It often naturalizes along roads or in fields.
* Special Features - You may love the way valerian smells, but if you do, you're in the minority. Most people who get a whiff of a valerian blossom think it smells a bit like cherry-vanilla...others think this plant smells terrible! I can't get enough of this delicous smell and am working on creating a patch of this wonderful plant!
* Germination - Seeds germinate easily and this plant can self seed if left alone. Which gives you more plants especially if you intend to use the roots for herbal teas. You can plant seeds directly in the garden in spring (they're frost hardy), but watch out for birds. Seeds germinate close to the surface and need a bit of light to quicken, so they're good candidates for predation. Keep them uniformly moist and they should germinate in a week to 10 days. You can also start seeds indoors.
