Cod Bottles were the original Soda Bottles made by numerous companies in the 1800's. They are a unique and somewhat Rare item.

They are all Hand Blown with a double pinch in the neck just below the mouth, forming a sort of goose neck where a marble was placed. They would then form the top lip, inside of which a rubber or wax ring was placed just inside the neck. When the bottles were filled the carbonation would push the marble up inside the mouth of the bottle holding it tight against the ring and forming a seal. When someone was ready to consume the drink they would push on the marble breaking the seal making a distinctive ‘Pop’ which is how ‘Soda Pop’ got it’s name.

This one is pretty old, the glass is thicker, has a few bubbles in the walls and has some residue on the interior, a small portion of the original rubber seal is also still inside. It is marked F. HARTRIDGE & SONS, COWES and has an overlapping F & S over a stretched H Trademark design. Another logo is faintly on the bottom and the number 1054.

It is just under 9” tall, 2 1/2” diam. There is a small moon type chip on bottom.
