I was picking up some lumber for my contracting business at a real, old fashioned lumber yard, when I saw this piece of old pine sticking out of a pile of wood that was destined for recycling. Even under the years of "hard times" and rusty nails, I could tell that there was something special about this "old guy", and I didn't much care for the idea of it being turned into sawdust only to wind up becoming an indistinguishable part of a piece of particle board. So, I did what I had to do. I rescued it.
I took it back to my shop, pulled the rusty old nails out of it, and started brushing it to clean it up a bit. The more I did, the more I realized that there was really something special about this piece of wood. I had never seen another piece quite like this. The natural graining and years of wear and tear had created something that can only be achieved by the collaborative works of Father Time and Mother Nature.

I originally thought of making it into several smaller shelves, but the more I cleaned and sanded it, the more I came to realize that I could never bring myself to cut it. So, here it is, just like I found it-- with the exception of being cleaned, sanded (numerous times with various grits), and finished in a beautiful golden water based polyurethane stain to highlight and preserve the natural characteristics of its graining, weathering, and age.
I also applied a couple of coats of water borne, clear satin polyurethane for further protection and enhancement. Oh, and one more thing. When I was done cleaning this "ugly duckling", I signed and dated the back of it, just because it seemed like something I had to do.

This truly one of a kind piece comes with pre-installed keyhole hangers on the rear, so it is ready to hang flush and level on your wall, and will look equally as beautiful in an urban loft or a rustic cabin.

Dimensions are as follows:

I am particularly proud of this item, as you might have already gathered. Thanks for stopping by.
