2020 Calendar with 12 original illustrations! Printed on crisp thick cardstock approximately 9"x 11" with a wire coil binding.

This year I’ve chosen to create illustrations of unique birds that I have been drawn to learn more about. These birds can all be seen around Vermont. Some more common than others. If you spend some time being attentive to the sky, trees, and water, you can spot these beautiful creatures in real life!

These birds are all monomorphic (or very near monomorphic) which means they do not display significant differences in feather colors, patterns or overall appearance based on their sex.  In fact, many animals do not have these sorts of visual indications and don’t need them.

This is interesting to me as humans often use visual gender assumptions as the basis of our daily interactions. Our connections with each other are deeply affected because of the need to understand and categorize someone based on our assumptions of their gender or sex.
What would It be like if that was different?
I invite you to take inspiration from these birds and imagine what kind of creativity, growth, and connection might be possible for us if we believed that knowing someone’s gender or sex on sight was simply not relevant - nor even possible to assess based on appearance.
Thanks for looking and considering this with me.
