LF022 - Shy Susan (L. Tetratheca gunnii)

The Shy Susan Ring has a little flower bud and leaf on top and the stem of the plant wraps around and gently hugs your finger. This ring is made from sterling silver and weighs approximately 4.4 grams. This piece was inspired by the Shy Susan (L. Tetratheca gunnii) which is also called “Shy Pinkbells”. This creamy pink flower is listed as ‘critically endangered’ by the Australian government. It has an extremely limited distribution, growing solely on 530 hectares of serpentine soils in the Dazzler Ranges, near Beaconsfield, where there are reportedly less than 200 individual plants. Mining, all terrain vehicles, fungal susceptibility, and backburning have all contributed to the decline of the Shy Susan, but there are a number of protective measures in place to secure the plant’s future, including a government-funded recovery plan.
