Protector of Forests, 2009
Woodfired Porcelain and Stoneware
14" long x 14" deep x 9" tall

Protector of Forests is a one of a kind, handmade sculpture. It was woodfired in a traditional Japanese-style anagama kiln for five days. During the firing, the ash and the flames of the kiln gave each part of the piece its unique coloration. Different clays were used to get different effects, like the dark stoneware tree trunks or the pale porcelain trees. The finished piece shows the delicate colors of the flames, with nothing painted or glazed.

The protector is a quite beast and seldom seen despite its size - or rather, just seldom noticed. Keep your eyes open next time you walk through mossy woods and you might catch sight of things you never have before.
