Dimensions

Height: 1.75 Inches; Width: 8 Inches

Carved from a small burl taken from a fallen maple tree, this bowl features a charming asymmetrical and organic shape, plus an interior that displays the variations in color and intricately convoluted grain patterns that burl wood is known for. The wood grain also shows the property known as chatoyancy, where the color of the wood changes with the angle it's viewed from. The outside has its own beauty, being dark, rough, and quite knobbly. Because this burl is naturally bowl-shaped, the entire outside of the piece, except for the flattening of the bottom, has no man-made cuts or shaping. And because this bowl is carved rather than turned on a lathe, the inside of it also follows the natural, asymmetrical shape of the burl. The result is an object that comes almost directly from the creative forces of nature to your hands. My humble role as a craftsman was merely to uncover its inherent beauty. This bowl is finished with polyurethane on the outside and a food-safe finish on the inside.

About 8 inches (20 cm) in its longest dimension, 4-1/2 inches (11 cm) wide and 1-3/4 inches (4.5 cm) high. It could be used to hold candies, jewelry or any other small items, or kept empty to better display its beauty. It also happens to have a shape that would make it ideal to use as a spoon rest if you like. But however you use it, it's sure to be a source of joy to everyone who sees it.
