ambrosia maple

Carved from a beautiful piece of ambrosia maple, this bread server or cheese board has a unique design of my own invention that I think is quite clever. The raised ends of the board provide easy gripping handles, and also help to hold in contents such as slices of bread or loose crackers. Between those raised ends, the center portion of the board is slightly dished, again to help hold contents, but this is shallow enough to make it easy for diners to get at the bread, cheese, crackers, or whatever is on the board. The overall shape of this board reflects its origin; it was made from a half-log with the rounded bark side facing up. Note that this board could also be used as a cutting board for bread, as long as you don't mind adding to its "character" with knife-marks.

Regarding the wood the board is made from, the term ambrosia maple refers to the streaky coloration of the wood -- areas of light brown outlined with darker borders. This remarkable coloring effect occurs when a certain type of beetle (commonly called an ambrosia beetle) burrows into a maple tree and introduces a certain fungus (called ambrosia fungus) into the wood. As with spalting, the fungus causes the wood to change color. The tiny boreholes left by the beetles are visible at a few spots in the piece, though any that were on the interior surface have been filled and sealed. The shape of this board happens to be a great way to show off the wonderful markings of ambrosia maple, as the end-grain at the two rising ends displays the three-dimensional nature of the embedded bands of color.

Dimensions are 16-3/4 inches (42 cm) long, with the interior space about 13 inches (33 cm) long. It's 6 inches (15 cm) wide and the handle ends are about 2 inches (5 cm) high.

Sanded and buffed completely smooth to allow for easy cleaning and finished with food-safe walnut oil.

Note: Upon request, I'll include my own recipe for sun-dried tomato Parmesan bread (see photo #8) with your purchase. It's delicious! (IMO)
