Egypt, pyramids and tombs.
As a child I wanted to become an archaeologist. I told my mother I would escavate royal tombs in Egypt, together with my handsome assistant, whom I would marry. The adventures of a child’s mind..

I haven’t been to Egypt - the closest I got to their ancient treasures was a Tutankhamun exhibition in Brussels and the Musée du Louvre as an art student. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tutankhamun. But I have my first name to console me. ;)

Egyptian jewellers liked to use strong colors (bue, red, green, turquoise, amber and yellow), each with their special meaning. Red for power and energy, green was the color for happiness and delight, dark blue for depth and purity, turquoise for joy, cleanliness and pleasure. They used amethyst, beryl, feldspar, garnet, lapis, opal and turquoise in the most exquisite designs.

In this pair of earrings, I tried to capture some of that bright color combination using red coral, green chalcedony and chalk turquoise. The design reminds of a lotus flower. Because of the lotus closing at night and sinking under water to emerge the next day at dawn, Egyptians saw in this flower the symbol of the sun and creation.

All metal used is sterling silver that has been oxidised and polished.

The earrings, including the ear wires are 5,8cm (2 ¼”) long and 4,5cm (1 ¾”) wide.
