This is the knitting pattern for Claire's Rent Shawl as shown in episodes 106 & 107 of season 1, and episodes 8-13 of season 2 of the Outlander television series.

To knit this shawl you will need:

Supplies:

• 1 pair of straight knitting needles size 9, or
• 1 pair of circular needles (or inter-changeable circular needles), size 9 (I recommend
using 40" circular cable).
• Extra large stitch holder, or extra cable with end caps to hold large number of stitches. • Stitch Markers
• 1 Large eye tapestry needle

Yarn:

You’ll need 3 different colors of worsted or heavy worsted weight yarn. Wool or wool blend is recommended, however if you are sensitive to animal fibers, a worsted weight acrylic will also work. I recommend Wool of the Andes (regular, tweed or super wash) yarn from KnitPicks (110 yards per 50g ball). Any other worsted weight or heavy worsted weight wool or wool blend can be substituted. Main color (MC) 3 balls. Color A (C-A) 2 balls, and Color B (C-B) 2 balls. Total yardage needed approx: 650-700 yards.

Finished & blocked measurements of this shawl are 70" wide (wingspan), and 34" up the center spine. There are also instructions on how to make the shawl smaller or larger if needed, which will change the required yarn yardage.

PLEASE NOTE: ***This pattern is best suited to an advanced or intermediate knitter, and uses "Intarsia" color work. If you do not know how to use "Intarsia", it would be good to learn before attempting this pattern.***

The tip for reversible intarsia is great and I love my finished shawl! There are links to video tutorials, but don't follow them exactly - use the description for the wrong side rows only. The pattern itself isn't clear about color changes, especially in decreasing the sides so that the main color doesn't travel across the contrast colors. I needed to find a free pattern online to figure that one out.

The knitting instruction turned out as amazing as I was expecting. This is my first ever knitting project, so while I'm not very familiar with the subject matter yet, it was pretty easy to understand. It's written in a way that ESL speakers understand - my mother whose mothertongue isn't English was able to understand the pattern as well. I am excited to start knitting and would definitely recommend this!
