This pair was named Hansel and Gretel by the artist, Vera La Fountain Dunn. This is a version of the children from Grimm’s Fairy Tale.

The pair appears to be dancing.

Hansel and Gretel wear matching outfits of pale spring green, olive and white. Their attire is decorated with purple flowers and additional accents. It looks like a traditional costume of some kind, maybe of Austrian or German origin.

The faces of the boy and girl are painted in the manner of many California artisans of the time, including: Jean Manley, Jane Fauntz and Hermione Palmer.

This is a book piece. An example of this pair, in a different color combination, is pictured in "California Potteries" by Mike Schneider on page 221.

Hansel is approximately 4 1/4" tall, 2" wide (measured elbow to elbow) and 1 3/4" deep. Gretel is approximately 3 3/4" tall, 2 3/8" wide and 1 3/4" deep. These are made of unglazed bisque pottery or ceramic. Vera La Fountain Dunn Barnware was only marked with paper labels. These labels covered the pour holes of the shakers. This pair no longer has their paper labels.

This pair is in excellent overall condition. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There is no age-related crazing. There are a few small spots of paint loss on the back of Gretel's skirt. These shakers appear to only have been displayed and never used.

This pair would also make an excellent cake topper because they are lightweight.

Striking and unique.
