100% silk organza is a lightweight but very crisp and sturdy translucent fabric that doesn't unravel easily, cuts and pins with ordinary sharp tools, runs through the sewing machine like a dream, steams gently into billowing folds — or presses absolutely flat like paper. This fabric makes beautiful modern, historical and traditional garments and crafts — like stunning Korean pojagi patchwork quilting and trendy, translucent coats and jackets. It's also the ideal fabric base for couture embellishments like flower making, tambour embroidery, beadwork, lace appliqués and fabric painting or dye stamping.

Working with silk organza is as easy as working with a crisp quilting cotton. It is nothing like working with polyester organza, which is a slippery, soft material. If you are used to working with polyester organza, forget everything you think you know about silk organza. You are in for a pleasant surprise!

Before pressing silk organza, pre-heat your iron so it won't spit or leak and test your temperature setting on a scrap of your material. But don't be too worried about pressing silk organza — not only does it sew well, it presses like a dream and can stand higher temperatures than its polyester counterpart.

The silk organza in this kit was marked DRY CLEAN ONLY, but we have found that it can be pre-washed in cold water. It may lose some of its crisp texture, and the darker, richer colors may not be completely colorfast. Rinsing with cold water and vinegar will help, but it is a good idea not to store dark or vividly colored silk garments in contact with delicate objects, and NEVER to put damp fabric on a doll or craft project.

NOTE: a DUOTONE — also known as a SHOT SILK or CHANGEABLE SILK — is a fabric made up of different colored warp (lengthwise) and weft (crosswise) threads. These fabrics will often appear iridescent and display subtle, shifting color tones depending on how the light hits them. Here's a tip: if one of our colors is called "smoked," it's a duotone with black. If it's called "frosted," it's a duotone with white.

We have not pre-washed or pre-treated any of these fabrics.

There are no smokers in our workroom, but we cannot promise that there were no smokers in the factory, warehouse, workshop, home or storefront from which we got these materials. We have not detected any odors.

There are cats in the same building as the Lee & Pearl workroom, though we have kept them separate from these fabrics.

The silk organza is really nice - the colors are bright and clear. I'm using it for pojagi and it looks so lovely in the window. It's also easy to work with. It came neatly packaged and had stickers with the color names on them. I've ordered three times!

I love the silk organza I ordered! The quality is excellent. I received an email from Lee & Pearl about the delay in shipping and I appreciated that. The delay was no fault of theirs and I totally understand that it is taking longer for USPS shipments to reach their destinations.
