Vintage clip on earrings made of operculum shell--a/k/a Pacific Cat's Eye, Pacific Eye, Cat's Eye, and probably a host of other names I'm not familiar with--date from the mid 1960s, and each has a patent number on the clip of 3159894 which dates to 1964-65 (for the clip mechanism itself). The operculum of a shell is like a trap door. Fishermen cut it off before extracting the meat for consumption.

Each earring measures 3/4" across x 13/16" high, and domes up to 1/4" not including the silver tone clip mechanism. The clips are attached via a springy pad thing so there's some play there, which appears to be intentional.

The condition of this awesome pair is excellent, nothing beyond normal wear to report.
