This high quality book plate is of a 1961 poster featuring one of renowned Anglo-American artist David Hockney's major early works, a portrait of English rock star/musician Cliff Richard enttiled, 'Doll Boy .'

Early in his development, David Hockney, one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century, had a distinct gay crush on rockstar Cliff Richard who was billed as Britain's version of Elvis Presley. "Richard was referenced directly and indirectly in Hockney's work. Often Hockney referred to him as 'Doll Boy' after Richard's 1958 hit single "Living Doll". Many of Hockney's early works have the letters "CR" or "DB" or the numerical representation "42" where 4 represents the D and 2 stands for the B."

The original poster, of which this listing is a high quality reprint, was created for a 1991 Hockney exhibit, 'Im Blickfeld' (In Focus), at Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany. The original 'Doll Boy' painting, created with oil on canvas in 1960-61, is part of the permanent collection at Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany; however, studies of the original can be viewed at the Tate Gallery in London.

About the Artist ...
World-renowned artist David Hockney was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1937. He knew he wanted to be an artist by the time he was ten and subsequently studied at Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London where he received a Gold Medal upon graduating in 1962.

Throughout the 1960’s, Hockney's art career grew exponentially. Absorbed in his work, he forged new ideas about seeing the world by intensely exploring a variety of forms. Working in almost every medium (painting, drawing, stage design, photography, and printmaking), he stretched the boundaries of all of them...from new ways of representing perspective and his use of brilliant colors, to his vivid multidimensional photo collages and fax art, computer printings and colored laser prints. By constantly questioning, seeking, and taking nothing for granted, he has opened new horizons on how we perceive the world and how art can alter our vision.

Hockney's been one of the most critically acclaimed artists of modern times, and the world's most prestigious galleries continue to celebrate his extraordinary work through solo exhibits each year. If you aren't familiar with his work, I suggest doing some research. He's truly a creative genius and visionary.
