Bearer of perhaps the most successful camouflage of any creature on land or sea, the Leafy Sea Dragon has many interesting attributes beside being covered with leaf-shaped appendages. The dragon grows up to 14” in length but cannot grip with his tail like his cousin the seahorse. All those floppy leaves on his boney body serve no purpose except to help him blend in; his two sets of transparent fins propel and steer him through the water. He is fond of just laying back and being tumbled through the current, looking for all the world like the kelp he so closely resembles.

This hand-painted pillow is so hopelessly intricate in design that I surprised even myself with the outcome! Measuring 20”x20”x5”, the permanent textile paint on commercial all-weather upholstery fabric makes this an eye-catching and practical accessory for your patio, deck, boat, porch swing, beach blanket or hammock; and looks great indoors as well! The envelope closure on the back allows you to easily remove the separate fiberfill insert for laundering. These are so easy to care for – a quick hosedown or spot cleaning usually takes care of any messes, but it can withstand gentle machine washing ; air dry. The tough-as-nails fabric resists stains, mildew, rain, sun, pollen, bug droppings and dog hair.

At about 28 months of age the male sea dragon sets out to locate a dragonette and signifies his availability by turning his tail bright yellow. If she is interested in his DNA, she lets him incubate her 250 bright pink eggs on the brood patch on his tail (nope, no pouch). About nine weeks later, taa daa – miniatures of the parents, ready to fend for themselves and to let dad get back to drifting.

Since they live in southern and eastern Australia, this is about as close as many of us will ever get to the Leafy Sea Dragon. Some aquariums have them, but only two in the entire world have successfully bred them, and they are a protected species at risk of becoming endangered. If you are lucky enough to be SCUBA diving near Adelaide, you may have seen them (or not realized you had seen them) among the kelp and seaweed. They dine on sea lice, shrimp, plankton and small fish, yet they have no teeth or stomach.

Seems like Australia gets all the really cool creatures . . .
