This skirt was upcycled out of a mayan tzotzil indigenous women´s skirt of southern Mexico.
Tzotzil are an ethnic group that belong to the mayan people.
Their craft is amazing, and the creativity and beauty of the designs is really breathtaking. Buying local handmade items supports small traditional productions, and the fabric from wich I made the skirt has been purchased respecting local fair trade.
I upcycled the original design (that was a wrap skirt) creating a high waisted fit, with a side zipper. I added intarfacing to the waist area to produce a more rigid look.
The fabric is heavily embroidered and has a pattern of wild jungle flowers in purple, blue. pink, green and red. The loom woven fabric has also shinny threads and it´s general colour is a dark dark navy blue, almost black.
A one of a kind creation, an original design by Ephemere that combines the natural beauty of traditional mexican emboroidered and needelart textiles with modern design.
