Description

Standing right in the middle of the street this great and inspiring structure seems to extend powerful arms welcoming you to a time long since past. Finished in 1931 the bridge was the centerpiece for the 23rd annual Portland Rose Festival. You can just imagine marching bands and rose covered floats coming right toward this very spot on a sunny June day.

During the dedication ceremony, the bridge engineer, David B. Steinman said:

"A challenge and an opportunity to create a structure of enduring beauty in the God-given wondrous background was offered us when were asked to design the bridge. It is the most beautiful bridge in the world we feel."

Mr. Steinman has a point.

The bridge was built within 21 months and one million dollars under budget. At the time of its completion, the bridge had:
• the highest clearance in the nation,
• the longest prefabricated steel cable rope strands,
• the tallest steel frame piers of reinforced concrete,
• the first application of aviation clearance lights to the towers, and
• longest suspension span west of Detroit, Michigan.

As an artist I find the design of this bridge so inspiring that I have a complete series of images in progress. It's a remarkable feeling just walking across it, let alone deftly timing the traffic to allow me to capture this iconic image.

11x14 inch photographic print on archival stock.
Excellent for framing and/or matting.

Print will be signed by the artist, and sent to you in a protective sleeve ensuring it reaches you in the best condition.

(Watermark is on this online version only. Watermark is
not on the print that you buy.)
