Exquisite art nouveau chatelaine in a rare, really spiky "hornback" crocodile with an ornately detailed cupid and birds silver frame. Has PAT FEB 17 - 1900 - etched onto the back frame.

The back and sides are flatter crocodile scales and all are in remarkably good condition with just a small bit of wear along the edges and some small holes in the front scales, some naturally occurring.

Chain has ornate links that duplicate the orb that the cupid is holding combined with smaller round links. Textured silver clasp lifts back to lock in the frame. Unlined.

From what I could discover on Google Patents, this is patent is no 644,067, dated February 27, 1900 and was applied for by Newark, New Jersey resident Benno Vom Eigen to make "neat and simply constructed" bag-frame catches for chatelaines and other belt bags. Very cool, especially considering that it still works perfectly.

The silver could use some polishing as there's considerable tarnishing. I don't think it's sterling.

A rare and wonderful find. Woud be a great accessory to a steampunk costume! I'll print out a copy of the patent and include it in the packaging.

Specific measurements are:

- across frame and purse body at widest 4 3/4"
- height 5 3/4 "
- chain drop 3 1/2"

Shipping within the US is FREE!. I'm happy to ship overseas but require that this be sent registered mail, which gives you a tracking # and insurance, at an additional cost of $11.00. I've figured that cost into the pricing on the chart. Thanks for looking!
