Item details

Height: 3 Inches; Width: 7.5 Inches

You can see from the other items in my shop that two of my favorite materials to work with are root wood and wood that's been chewed on by beavers. With this bowl's wood I got both in one. The dead tree it came from was growing at the edge of a stream, and erosion caused some of the root system to be exposed. Then beavers came along and gnawed off much of the bark from the root, leaving behind their grooved toothmarks. Being root wood, the interior of this bowl displays some spectacular, "every-which-way" grain figure and striking variations in color. On the exterior, one side shows dark, convoluted bark, while the other side has its bark removed with the beaver toothmarks mentioned above.

In addition to the random shape and grain figure inherent to root wood and the toothy modifications made by beavers, a third force of nature that has contributed to the beauty and character of this bowl is decay. As you can see, there's a fissure on one side where "the conquer worm" (actually a fungus) of rot has disintegrated some of the wood. (All the remaining wood is sound and stable.)

All in all, this is a bowl that virtually shouts out its origins in the world of nature. It's a wonderful example of how the randomness of nature can result in objects that seem imbued with not only beauty, but artistry. The piece is finished with polyurethane on the outside and a food safe finish on the inside.

Roughly square in shape, this piece is about 8 inches long by 7 inches wide (20.5 x 18 cm) and 2-3/4 inches (7 cm) high. A nice size for holding candies, fruit, miscellaneous desk items, or to simply be kept as an ornament and enjoyed for its extravagant natural beauty and character. It will not only be a joy to the eye, but a conversation piece as well.
