Anaconda Mine of Butte Montana is commemorated on this sterling silver souvenir demitasse vintage spoon.

“Oro Y Plata”, Montana’s State Motto (meaning Gold and Silver) is at the top of this sterling silver collector demitasse spoon. The Engine House and miners decorate the rest of the handle along with “Montana” at the base.

The bowl of the spoon contains a picture of the mining town and has "Anaconda Mine Butte Montana" written in the sky.

The back of the handle is decorated as well with a building and a steer. It also has the early maker’s mark for Joseph Mayer Bros. Inc and “sterling”. I believe that this mark for Mayer Bros. dates this spoon to before 1930.

The spoon measures 4” (10.2cm) long.

It is in very good condition with all the decoration intact. There is staining/marks on the back of the bowl. There could be some staining along the inner rim of the bowl. I cannot tell if it is staining or if it is meant to be clouds in the sky of the landscape.

As with most of the sterling pieces I sell I clean & polish them enough to show the detail. There is still patina on this piece. If you like your sterling silver very shiny, you will want to polish this piece more when you receive it.

This spoon is from my grand-aunt’s collection. As she did not fly, it is likely that she visited the Anaconda Mine on one of her trips out to the west coast via train.

The Anaconda Mine was a large copper mine in Butte, Montana purchased in 1881 by Marcus Daly from Michael Hickey. Hickey, a Union Civil War veteran, named his claim the Anaconda Mine after reading a Civil War account of how Ulysses S. Grant’s forces had surrounded Robert E. Lee’s forces “like an Anaconda”.

Thanks for stopping in! Have a wonderful day!
