“Nutria fur is the only fur I’ll wear” she says as she flings her silken hair over her shoulders…

Part of the Coypu Collection

My new line of jewelry features fur! The pieces are vintage-inspired, but modern too, clever, and brave. The fur is delicious. Warm, brown, with small golden highlights, shiny, and very soft. The fur is clean, sanitized and a delight to wear. Since each piece is handmade by me, there may be slight variations in the fur, but this is part of the beauty of each piece.

The coypu or nutria (Myocastor coypus), is a large, herbivorous, semiaquatic rodent. Originally native to temperate South America, it has since been introduced to Louisiana. Although it is still valued for its fur in some regions, its destructive feeding and burrowing behaviors make this invasive species a pest throughout most of its range. They feed on wetland plants, and waste close to 90% of the plant material while feeding on the stems. Their feeding habits are destroying the fragile wetlands of Louisiana’s battered coast, exacerbating erosion and resulting in more and more open water where there was once marsh.

As a native of southern Louisiana, I see our disappearing wetlands every time I venture out, which is pretty often. I am part of a non-profit located in New Orleans, Louisiana called Righteous Fur, and we make beauty out of these pelts, which would otherwise be wasted, in a landfill, or at the bottom of the swamp. A portion of proceeds of any Nutria fur item from my bijoux collection FUR goes to coastal restoration and preservation of our wetlands.

When you wear these pieces, you are wearing jewelry that has been lovingly handcrafted, plus you’re helping save the US’s lower coastline!

All of my jewelry comes gift-wrapped, ready for giving!
