This friendly, hardworking bear is a cast iron piggy bank apparently circa 1910 and made in the USA by the A.C. Williams company.

He's in pretty good shape and temper for a bear that old too, although his original golden paint is mostly worn off.. Frankly, though, it just gives him an aura of age and wisdom. (Am I going over the top here?) He's 5 1/2" high and there's a little bit original red paint around his eyes and along his mouth.

There is no maker's stamp but from the looks of him he was made by the A.C. Williams Company, which made myriad piggy banks and other toys of cast iron around the turn of the last century which have become collectors' items. A.C. Williams Co. was in Ravenna, Ohio and operated from 1844 to the present day (in a changed form). According to antiquetoys.com the founder was John W. Williams and their specialty was cast-iron, horse-drawn rigs, autos, airplane, and tractor toys from 1893 to 1923; the line included mostly miniatures distributed through Woolworth, Kresge's, and other five-and-dime stores.

The shipping might seem high but the bear weighs only a shade under one pound and because of his value, the shipping will use a Canada Post service that provides a tracking number.
