This is a limited edition reproduction (limited to 250) of of an original gyotaku, a Japanese printmaking technique. The reproduction was printed with archival lightfast ink on an acid free watercolor paper. In gyotaku ink is applied to the body of a fish, then rice paper is laid onto the fish and gently rubbed to receive the ink.

More often known as fish printing, gyotaku is gaining in popularity as an alternative to taxidermy or as a memento of a special catch. I often dye my papers with archival fiber dyes, and sometimes add plants or other sealife to an image for the feeling of an underwater scene.

This grayby s a colorful tropical grouper from the Gulf of Mexico. It is printed in oil based relief ink in natural colors on rice paper. The background print is a monoprint of Sargassum seaweed that was printed on the back side of the paper, then the Sargassum was nature printed after the fish were printed. Having the fish look realistic is important to me, and I work with my subjects to get the correct colors and shading as if the fish were in the water.

This image is signed and stamped with a traditional red seal of the orient. This seal, designed ans carved by a friend in Japan, translates as “flower” because my name- heather- is a flower as well.

Image size 16 x 22 This is the size before matting and framing. Price listed includes standard ground shipping to all mainland states. Will be shipped rolled in a tube. For expedited shipping please contact me.
