This is a limited edition reproduction (limited to 250) of of an original gyotaku, a Japanese printmaking technique. The reproduction was printed with archival lightfast ink on an acid free watercolor paper. In gyotaku ink is applied to the body of a fish, then rice paper is laid onto the fish and gently rubbed to receive the ink.

More often known as fish printing, gyotaku is gaining in popularity as an alternative to taxidermy or as a memento of a special catch. I often dye my papers with archival fiber dyes, and sometimes add plants or other sealife to an image for the feeling of an underwater scene.

These two fish are two of the Gulf Coast Grand Slam of snook, redfish, and sea trout, hence the title "two down". Both fish are the maximum allowed by current regulations, Redfish 27" and the snook 32", the final print is 18" x 34".

Both are printed in oil based relief ink on a translucent paper from Taiwan. I also dyed the paper with archival fiber dyes to look like shadows in the coastal water. Having the fish look realistic is important to me, and I work with my subjects to get the correct colors and shading as if the fish were in the water.

This image is signed and stamped with a traditional oriental red seal that is a translation of my name in Japanese kanji symbols.

Image size 18 x 34. This is the size before matting and framing. Price listed includes standard ground shipping to all mainland states. Will be shipped rolled in a tube. For expedited shipping please contact me.
