Item details

Vintage from the 1940s

This solid oak dish was designed in 1940 by Mary Wright, reknowned American designer (and wife of Russel Wright) in 1940. She was inspired by Native American chopping bowls and you can see the influence in the curves and slight asymmetry.

The dish was made by Klise Manufacturing Company. The product line was called "Frosted Oak" and was part of The American Way cooperative marketing program of 65 designers that she organized with her husband Russel. The collection was introduced by Eleanor Roosevelt at the Macy's in New York CIty.

The dish is solid, carved oak and has a pickled finish. It has a cluster of tiny pit marks (like less than 1mm each--see photo) in one inside corner, and a few light discolored spots and other miniscule signs of wear. Overall it's in very nice condition. The finish is smooth with a soft sheen.
