Devon oak bark leather comes from the J&FJ Baker tannery in Colyton in the South of England. Bakers are the last remaining oak bark tannery in Britain so the traditional leather that they produce is now quite rare. They use English cowhide and oak bark from English trees to produce a top quality, full grain, vegetable tanned bridle leather in a tanning process which takes over a year to complete. The item itself was fine, It’s certainly genuine Ritza TT and I received the colour & length I ordered. Just so you know what you’re getting with regards to packaging though, I have to say its pretty poor. I’ve bought this thread from 7 other shops on Etsy so far and every one of them has packaged the thread on a bit of card of some description so it doesn’t get tangled and is easy to pull off lengths when using.. this shop doesn’t, it was simply taped up in a bundle that took 15 minutes to untangle when I tried to transfer it to a spool. On a side note, this is the most I have paid for this thread out of the 8 purchases I have made so far and also the first time I’ve had to pay extra for P&P. I thought for the extra £3 it was going to be sent on a nice little spool or something and was quite surprised when I opened it.
I clearly state in the item description exactly how the product is packaged and also include a photograph so there is no ambiguity in this. When people do not take the time to read any of the information and then leave unfavourable reviews I find this unfair. There is no issue with the way in which I package the thread, I have sold thousands of lengths over many years and only a handful of people have ever mentioned this. If I carded the thread this would lead to an increase in both item and postage costs. In terms of postage there is no such thing as free postage, the customer did not pay 'extra' they simply paid for the postage. Hiding this cost in the item price makes no sense to me since people ordering 5 or 10 items would pay this hidden cost 5 or 10 times.
Made to order (so consider the lead time if you purchase as a gift as I did). Not a long wait and well worth it. Gorgeous colouring and shaping. Sturdy but flexible cover with robust double elastics for two inserts (and the extra two shorter ones could be useful too). Of all the ones I checked on Etsy, I'm glad I chose this maker.
Unlike most leather craft patterns you find on Etsy, this is a detailed plan with tips and instructions, plus a very helpful video. Both bags can be completed by beginners (like me) but are challenging enough to be fun.
Between the very clear pattern and excellent teaching video on YouTube, I could not be happier with my selection. Everything I've purchased from Ian has been top notch. If you wish to begin leather working, do yourself a favor and invest some time in his tuition, you will not be sorry.
