Unique and Exclusive *Rune Dice* in Ash Wood! Set 42.

These rune dice are featured in a treasury by CynART honouring Thor here: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/ODg2Njk4NXw0MTgwMDYyNjY/thor-was-here

... and in one by palimpsestic entitled "Inside the Forbidden Cabinet" here: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/OTY0Mzk2OHw2NTE2ODc4MjY/inside-the-forbidden-cabinet

This is a beautiful set of three rune dice made entirely by hand and without the use of power tools of any kind. Even the symbols are burnt into the surface of the wood with a selection of straight lines I heat in a flame before applying them to the bare wood. Crafting items in this way is both labour intensive and time consuming, but it feels right to honour the ancestors by using their methods whenever practical. And it means you get a truly original and authentic piece of useable, heirloom quality traditional art to aid you in your magical practice.

While I'm not claiming that these dice will give you the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything, as they're number 42 in the series you just never know! LOL According to some folks Ash is the original wood used for runes, which makes sense as a lot of people believe it was on the great Ash tree that formed the axis of the world that the God Odin hung to gain their wisdom. It's certainly an immensely suitable wood to use for such items as it's relatively light weight whilst at the same time being extremely tough and hard wearing. It's also pale enough for the symbols to show clearly, and one die in this particular set has a tiny knot on one corner just to add a bit of interest! Apart from that, the Ash is one of my favourite trees and in my opinion the wood is vastly underrated for magical uses. These can be used just like regular runes, by casting them and interpreting the symbols that are uppermost, and the different angles of the faces allow many shades of meaning to be used in interpretation, which makes them extremely accurate. They're easy to carry and much more difficult to lose than regular runes, with a satisfying chunkiness and solidity that will make you want to handle them constantly. I wish I could really explain just how incredibly tactile these dice are, it's almost impossible to put them down!

This is my own design that you will not find anywhere else in the world, and I'm very proud of it! :-)

A few months ago one of my customers asked me to make some rune dice and as I was unwilling to make the ordinary regular cubic dice, this is what I came up with. It wasn't easy coming up with something quite new, but I had a picture in my head of what I wanted and I wasn't going to settle for anything less. Let me tell you, perfecting these rune dice really has cost me blood, sweat and tears, not to mention the fact that I think I've actually invented a whole new range of swear words! :-D I only use basic hand tools, no fancy power saws that will make all the angles true & churn out replicas time and time again. First of all I select a well seasoned log out in the wood shed and saw it into a long square block, similar to the blanks you can buy for woodturning. Then, for the dice themselves, each separate saw cut means I have to clamp the wood at a different angle in order to cut that face, so that's eight times each die has to be clamped and sawn, and every time it has to be measured and lined up as accurately as I can. Any small imperfections are down to the nature of hand crafting, I'm not a robot but a real live human being! The design is copyrighted to me, they can only be bought from me and (if you don't include all the ones that failed to make the grade and got used to light the fire) this set is only the forty-second set I've ever made... how rare and exclusive do you want?

I recently worked out that if I continue to make a set of these on average once a week then it would take me almost 20 years to make 1000 sets! It really brings home the exclusivity of hand made items over mass production where a single production run can number many thousands of identical items, each of which is indistinguishable from all the others.

Each die is octohedral, meaning it has eight faces, instead of the six faces to be found on a cube. The shape resembles two pyramids base to base, with the edges and corners slightly rounded to enable the dice to actually roll when you cast them. For you gamers out there, they're a similar but not quite identical shape to the D8 dice. After sanding each die with at least four different grades of sandpaper, the rune symbols are burned into the surface of the wood so they won't wear away or chip off and there's no reason why these dice shouldn't outlast me by a very long time. I always burn the symbols in sacred space, and the Gods are always invited. So if one of them decides to jog my elbow at a crucial moment and make the symbol a little less than perfect I try to take it as a joke... after all, the old Norse Gods are known for their somewhat robust sense of humour! :-) The symbols are arranged so each die holds an Aett and, if your maths is up to scratch, you'll have worked out that there isn't room for a blank. You can easily hold all three dice in one hand and the symbols are large and clear enough to be read without squinting, even by firelight. I've included plenty of photos as they're really not easy things to get the feel of from a picture. The wood has been lightly oiled and the natural oils from your skin should be all that's needed to keep these dice in good condition, but I'll include care instructions for you. They'll only get better with age and use.

I do not include a bag or casting instruction with any of my rune sets, and these are no exception. That's because the bag you keep them in should be sewn by had, by you and preferably made from an item of your old clothing to strengthen the bond between you and them. As for instructions, the amount of information I could realistically include in a give away leaflet would be sadly insufficient for the novice and totally irrellevant for the experienced caster, so I prefer not to waste the paper, thereby saving trees, so hopefully there will be a supply of wood for future generations to craft runes from!

Best known for being Yggdrasil the World Tree in the Northern Tradition, Ash has a powerful affinity with the powers residing in water. It is good for magic to do with healing and karma, and is said to provide protection from drowning. It can be used in spells that require focus and strength and it is said to banish mental strife. It is said that an Ash staff hung above the door will ensure protection of the home.

Size: Each triangular face is about an inch and one eighth along the bottom and about an inch along each side.
28mm x 25mm.

They will come with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity, consisting of a picture and the list of the magical properties of the wood. You will also receive care instructions, as I expect them to be well looked after! ;-)
