An exquisite single reel of early twentieth century (or possibly late 19th century) extra-strong heavy-duty orange machine thread on a deep pink wooden reel. It was made by J. & P. Coats of Paisley, Scotland and carries the most wonderful labeling (as does the box - not included in sale - for which see the last photo). The condition is excellent and unused.

Its colour is listed as S.2486 and there are 200 yards/183 metres on the reel. I wonder if this thread, though made in Great Britain, was destined for the US market as 'color' is written on the box (no 'u'). The box, which isn't included in the sale, would originally have held 12 spools and is a little grubby, though still structurally sound. It is not included in the sale but can be purchased by separate arrangement - do convo me if you're interested.

I'd like to think this is the kind of thread used to topstitch early jeans in the US, though that's probably just my fanciful imagination running away with me. Whatever its originally intended purpose, this handsome thread spool would look stunning on display with your sewing things. Alternatively, the cotton is in pristine condition and could still be used.

Size: 4.5 cms tall x 2.9 cms diameter.
