About the art of chainmaille: Chainmaille is an ancient art, with some weaves dating over a thousand years old. Nowadays, there are machines that can "weave" broad sheets of the simple European 4-in-1 weave for armor, but all hand-made jewelry chainmaille is still built the old-fashioned way, which is opening and closing each individual ring as needed to weave it in with the rest to build the piece. Depending on the weave, size of the rings, material, and overall size and purpose of the piece being made, it can take anywhere from hours to days to make a particular piece.
For all but the largest, heavy gauge rings, I wear a lighted magnifying head set/visor on my head in order to try to close each individual ring as flush and invisible as possible. Also, I dip the tips of my stainless steel pliers in a temporary rubber-like coating to help keep the pliers from scratching and marring the rings. Any rings going in to the piece are individually inspected for cutting marks (there are a few in each batch that will escape quality control efforts) and also any ring that will not close to my satisfaction (I can be a little OCD about my closures) will be discarded and not used in the piece. Any piece that can stand the tumbling process will be cleaned, finished, and work-hardened by tumbling with stainless steel jewelry shot mix anywhere from hours to days, or even weeks for the antiquing process.
