A FINE VINTAGE GILT METAL TIARA COMB DEPICTING TWO CONFRONTING PEACOCKS AND FURTHER EMBELLISHED WITH CLEAR RHINESTONES.

SIZE: height at centre front 2 ins (5 cms), total width 6 ins (15 cms)

CONDITION: good vintage condition with a few missing rhinestones among the flowers, easily replaced. Signs of wear and use are to be expected on pre-owned items. I see a few missing rhinestones but these can easily be replaced.

DATE: these traditional headdresses are difficult to date since they were made in the same style for many years.

DESCRIPTION:

This is very beautiful gilt metal filigree Anglo Indian tiara comb. It is made with the teeth projecting backwards from the heading at an angle of 45% so that they are concealed by the hair in wear. Therefore it gives the effect of a tiara.

The motif in the front of the tiara represents two figural peacocks confronting. The peacock is the national bird of India and appears in much of the artwork of that country.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

n the 1870s Queen Victoria became Empress of India and this led to an influx into Europe of ornaments made in India for the Western market. The interaction of the Indian population with their British rulers led to an art form which was a mixture of styles, one which we now call Anglo-Indian. This is because the object produced under this influence were not the kind which the indigenous population themselves would have used. Nevertheless they showed elements of what was considered an Indian style, carefully adapted to suit European tastes.

We find these imported ornaments in a wide variety of materials and styles, such as metal filigree, granulation, and gilt metal repousee sometimes set with coloured stones. They are an interesting example of an era, and of how personal adornment was influenced by travel to other lands and cultures.
