I designed this lovely Carolina Shawl to be a replica of the one worn by Caitriona Balfe of the TV show “Outlander”, Season 4 Drums of Autumn. It's a lovely rustic-look garter stitch triangle shawl with stripes on the bottom. Perfect for cuddling up by the fire on a cold evening on Fraser’s Fridge.

A fairly easy and quick knit using 650 yards of bulky/chunky weight yarn in 3 colors (390 yards dark brown, 130 yards black, 130 yards of lighter brown), all garter stitch, with a center spine.

Skill level: advanced beginner (must have basic knitting and pattern reading skills)

SUPPLIES (you will need):

• 5 skeins of Berroco Vintage Chunky yarn, 650 yards yarn in 3 colors (390 yards of “Chocolate” dark brown, 130 yards of “Cast Iron” black, 130 yards of “Forrest Floor” lighter moss brown) - You may also use your choice of wool or wool blend bulky weight yarn in any colors of your choosing.

• 1 US size 10.5 circular needle (I recommend using 40” circular cable)

• 1 Large eye tapestry needle

Sizing: This shawl is one size, with instruction on how to size up or down for plus size or petite.

Finished Measurements: wing span 76”, center spine 38”.

At first glance the pattern is great, but unfortunately it wasn’t as accurate as it could be. I followed the instructions and used the recommended yarn and needles, but fell short of yarn on both the main color and the color stripes. I was able to patch in a similar yarn for the last yard or so of the main color, but was significantly short for the color stripes. Just something to be aware of if you buy yarn specifically for this project. Also, anyone who has made a few shawls before probably can visualize the pattern direction as written, but beginners would probably appreciate a small graphic to assist with that. It’s fairly common on most patterns I’ve seen elsewhere. She was kind when answering my questions and I have purchased another pattern I hope to have better luck with.

I am not thrilled, because there is neither a description nor a quantity indication for large sizes. There is no drawing, no knitted script and no explanation of the abbreviations used. The seller wasn't really helpful in response to my questions either.
