This style of Tam was customarily worn by 17th & 18th century Scots. This pattern is best suited to an advanced beginner to intermediate knitter. You'll need to know how to knit in the round on circular needles using the magic loop method. How to knit, purl, do increases and decreases, how to follow a basic knitting pattern, and how to felt a knitted item. The tam pattern shows instructions for 3 sizes M, L & XL, but also info on how to size up and down one more size if needed. The tam is knit on circular needles (using the magic loop method), and then welt felted (fulled). I’ve included extra photos in the pattern to show how things should look as you go along, as well as a tutorial with photos on how to felt and shape your tam after it is knit. You’ll need approximately 250 yards of a 100% wool yarn, like Knit Picks, Wool of the Andes (or other similar wool) in a worsted weight. You’ll also need 2 circular needles (or interchangeable needles) in size 7 and size 8, a cable that is 40” (for Magic Loop technique), and 1 large eye tapestry needle.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Copyright info: Pattern is the registered copyright of Sandie Russo (KnitzyBlonde) all rights reserved, 2015-2020. All custom orders, including the Outlander custom knits, have a wait list due to the popularity of the Outlander TV show and my lovely replica knits. This means that it can take at least 8 weeks or more for you to receive your order, (depending on how many orders are ahead of yours) so please allow for that when ordering. Contact me if you have a timing concern.

The instructions were very clear. I made 2 tams this weekend, both with different brands of wool yarn. Both hats felted beautifully.
Perfect transaction and an easy knit! I whipped this up while watching a movie and felted it the following day. My friend loved it for xmas!
Great pattern. Clear and well written . I was a little uncertain if I could cope but 3/4 way done and its been easy. Its the sign of clear and concise instruction. I will not hesitate to buy another Outlander themed pattern soon. Thank you .
This was my first time using magic loop and the pattern was easy follow. My store was out of 40inch needles and I was eager to get started so I tried to get away with a 29inch cable. It was doable but required a lot of fiddling with my stitches. Take the advice a go with the longer ones! Don’t be scared off by the felting- the directions were spot on! I used dawn instead of the product recommend. I can’t wait to gift this to my dad for his trip to Scotland!
