For Leah ONLY-Final payment on layaway. This is an antique Chinese Export necklace from 1880's up to around the turn of the 20th century, give or take. It is constructed of gilded sterling or 800 silver filigree enhanced by plique-a-jour cloisonne enamel in floral motifs. This type of Chinese jewelry is very scarce today, especially locket necklaces. The locket is also filigree and is therefore "open". It can be used to hold potpourri, momentos or for its original purpose- hair locks of a loved one.

The chain is composed of individual filigreed and plique-a-jour enameled barrel links connected by three plain links between them. The barrel links are constructed of a filigree chain mail mesh that had gone out of use in Chinese jewelry around 1900 due to its difficulty and intricacy. Enamel colors are purple, white, red, cobalt, turquoise, green and black. The box clasp is marked "SILVER" and also has some twisted wire cloisonne enamel decoration.

Excellent antique condition.

Chain is 23" (58.42 cm) long. The barrel links are 3/16" (4.8 mm) diameter x 5/8" (1.71 cm) long. The hair locket is 1-1/4" (3.175 cm) diameter x 1/2" (1.27 cm) thick.
