California Twin Winton Pottery - Native American Indian Caricature Salt and Pepper Shakers

A fantastic vintage pair of Twin Winton salt and pepper shakers. When I saw these, it was instant love. The artists who created this pair really were twins! Don and Ross Winton were two very talented California pottery artists who began their careers working out of their garage and became quite well known for their “Twin Winton” figural pottery. These have all of the whimsy and charm for which these twin brothers were famous! One of the brothers even went on to design the Emmy and the Mickey Mouse telephone.

There may be other Twin Winton indian shakers out there but I was unable to locate any. Since all of their pieces were hand made, this pair will not be exactly like any others even if they do exist.
The research I have done makes me believe that these are most likely from the late 40's or very early 50's.

These shakers are quite collectible--they would be an important addition to a salt and pepper shaker collector as well as individuals who collect Americana, especially that which reflects the changing perceptions of Native American indians. They were created during a period in America when Native American caricatures were considered to be cute and were all the rage. Similar to depictions of African Americans, it was quite common to find all ethnic groups being represented by items such as this.

They are brown, painted with that almost grainy woodlike look for which the twins were famous. The shiny glazed embellishments are yellow and black. Particularly wonderful are the shiny black eyes. I love the way the catch the light and sparkle. They would definitely be a conversation piece on a table, especially at Thanksgiving!

Condition: Both do show a little vintage wear. Condition is really quite good on the salt. There is more loss of brown paint on the pepper, especially in the back and on the bottom. Also both have some loss of enamel on the yellow decorated area (bottom front). Please see the photos and if you want to see additional ones, just let me know. They are still quite in quite remarkable condition for their age.

Size: 5” high, 4” wide, 3-½” deep
