Vintage from the 1900s

brilliant cut crystal

This is a tall 14" rich and gorgeous heavy trumpet style cut glass vase from the brilliant period in American glass cutting. The vase is crisply cut with deep cuts that catch and throw light beautifully even when lighting conditions are low. This piece adds drama and sparkle anywhere it resides, in the center of your table with a beautiful spray of fresh flowers, on a console, or in a china cabinet. Adding a cut glass piece of this quality to your home is truly like adding diamonds to the setting. The sparkle is thrilling.

I did some research to see if I could verify my feelings about the high class provenance of this vase and was lucky enough to find some good details about its origin. It is from a company called Pitkin and Brooks who first started business in Chicago as dealer and importers if crockery and glassware in 1872 only months after the historic great Chicago fire. It wasn't until 1899 that the company began making their own cut glass. Over the next 23 years, they operated a series of cut glass factories that produced some excellent products and acquired five cut glass patents before getting out of the cut glass business about 1922.

This particular vase design appeared in the Pitkin and Brooks 1902-1903 catalog where it was titled the "Erie". It could be ordered in 4 different sizes. There was only one size larger than this 14" size. The design features a rich and complex series of interdependent deep cut features that are highlighted by 3 particularly brilliant large fan cut designs that flare to the top of the piece and create the structure for the drama played out by many symmetrical smaller areas of varying types of cuts. The top edge is finished with the varying height three part saw tooth glass cuts.

Another outstanding feature of this antique piece of fine glass is its condition. So often a piece this age is riddled with chips large and small, however, this piece is as close to perfect as I have seen -- one tiny nick on the outside beveled edge of one tooth that can only be detected by careful feel, and a tiny small smooth dimple in the base which probably resulted from a tiny bubble during the manufacturing process.

This is truly an exceptional piece of fine antique glassware that fits right in with today's trend turn that wants to bring back more sparkle to our previously minimalist obsessed spaces. You won't regret a decision to splurge on this one.
