Beautiful, Teeny-Tiny *Pocket Runes* in Natural Rowan Wood!

These runes feature in a treasury celebrating magic by FifthRealmPress here: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/MTQyMDY0MzR8Mzg1OTk3NzA4/the-earthiness-of-magic

... and in one celebrating runes in all their forms by redfire here: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/NjQzMDY0NXw2NDU5Mjc4ODY/runes-have-many-forms

This is an absolutely superb set of incredibly tiny runes made from a single length of Rowan wood. They are cut the traditional way, with each rune tablet being a slice of the branch, and they still have the bark attached. The wood has seasoned to a rich toffee colour and the chocolate coloured bark still has the wafer thin outer layer intact to give it a pale, silvery green sheen. I think this is probably one of the smallest sets I've ever made that have had the symbols burned onto them, and I'm not planning on doing any more any time soon as they were so fiddly to deal with. They really are so tiny that they take up almost no room at all in a pocket or bag and the entire set fits easily in one hand; and as an extra bonus the shipping is roughly half of what you'd pay for a larger set! It's useful to be able to always have your divination tools to hand, and you only need a very small space to cast them. Runes this size take pretty much the same amount of time to make as larger sets but they’re somehow just extremely pleasing. Rowan wood is thought by some to be the "original" wood for runes, because the words "Rowan" and "Rune" are closely related linguistically. Whether or not that's the case, Rowan wood is an ideal material for runes as it's very tough and hardwearing. It's also said to increase psychic power, which is certain to help with any kind of divination. The symbols are burned into the surface of each rune so they won’t wear away or chip off. I try to keep as close as possible to the traditional way of crafting magical items in order to be a part of the unbroken line of everyone who has made or used such items in the past, and I value the sense of continuity provided by this. Therefore, all the sawing and sanding is done entirely by muscle power and I don’t use an electrical pyrography tool for the symbols. Instead, I heat up a collection of straight lines in a flame before applying them to the bare wood. It’s time consuming and fairly often results in burnt fingers, certainly on this small scale, but at least it’s authentic! This set includes the blank or wyrd rune, although I know it’s a modern addition and not everybody uses it.

I do not include either a bag or instructions with any of my rune sets. That’s because the bag you keep them in should be made by you, sewn by hand and preferably made from an item of your old clothing to enhance the link between you and them. As for instructions, the amount of information I could realistically include in a give away leaflet would be totally insufficient for a novice and completely irrelevant for the experienced caster, so I prefer not to waste the paper.

Rowan is very protective, especially against lightning and evil witchery, and can be useful in healing. It is said to increase psychic powers and bring power and success. It is allegedly the best wood to use if dowsing for metal. It is also the traditional choice for Druid's staffs.

Size: About three eighths of an inch across and a quarter of an inch thick.
10-12mm x 5mm.

This item will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.

Safety first! Because of their small size, these runes could constitute a choking hazard, so please keep them out of the reach of pets and children.

Please be aware that some countries do not allow the importation of any wooden items that still have the bark attached. It is up to you to ensure that an item is not in breach of the customs regulations of your country before you buy.

I’ve been criticized for charging as much for a set of runes this size as I do for a larger set, and I suspect that those who hold this opinion either don’t understand the crafting process or simply expect me to price my items with no thought of honesty or fairness. When you buy from me what you actually pay for is the time it takes me to make that item, which is why small runes cost as much as large ones. I think you're getting a bargain by only having to pay this much for at least four hours of my life! The making process is exactly the same and the amount of time saved by sawing and sanding the relatively small surfaces compared to larger ones is negligable. You know how I get the wood and you know I don’t have to pay for it, so why do you think I should charge more for something that uses a lot of wood than for something that only uses a little? I don’t think that’s very fair and it’s certainly not honest. I would imagine that anyone who does sell smaller runes for proportionately less money than larger ones must either be charging too much for the larger ones to begin with or must have to buy the raw materials they use by the cubic inch (or possibly centimetre, in these modern days!)
After looking at what else is available both online and in "real" stores I fully believe that all my items, and especially the runes, are much better finished than anything else you can buy for the same price, as well as most of the things that cost a lot more!
