Another new addition to our line of unique items….A Vintage Voltage Regulator Tube Night Light!

Now a technical description:

A voltage-regulator tube (VR tube) is an electronic component used as a shunt regulator to hold a voltage constant at a pre-determined level.
Physically, these devices resemble vacuum tubes, but there are two main differences:
- Their glass envelopes are filled with a gas mixture, and
- They do not use a heater.
Electrically, these devices resemble zener diodes, with the following major differences:
- They rely on gas ionization, rather than zener breakdown
- The unregulated supply voltage must be 15–20% above the nominal output voltage to ensure that the discharge starts
- The output can be higher than nominal if the current through the tube is too low.

These devices have been out out production for many years and are starting to become a collectable. The tube used in this item is a genuine vintage type 0A3. These tubes are becoming very collectable. They were manufactured by various U.S. companies from the 40's through the 50's. This tube is the older version with the "Beer Bottle" shape manufactured around the 1940's era.

This night light is controlled by a photo resistor and will turn on when exposed to a dark setting and turn off when there is light automatically. It plugs into any North American A.C. wall outlet. The enclosure is made of solid oak and black cast acrylic plastic top and bottom. It measures 2 inches x 2 inches x 3 inches minus the tube. The tube adds 3 inches to the height. The orange glow from the neon gas is quite beautiful at night. The design limits the brightness somewhat to preserve the life of the device but it still should last for many years. The tube is mounted using a tube socket so if you desire to change the tube it is just a matter of unplugging the tube and replacing it. Whether you use it as a night light or just a unique conversation piece is your decision but it will guide you through a dark room at night.

Why not be the first to own such a unique and collectable piece of electronics history? You will not be disappointed!
