Ammonites are one of the most famous types of fossil, and have been valued throughout history. They receeved their name in ancient Greece, where they were called "Horns of Ammon" after the curling ram's horns that the Egyptian god Amun was often depicted with. This is a nice little ammonite shell, well preserved and with intact shell chambers. It shows an interesting mix of clear calcite and opaque hematite filling, making for a beautiful and varied look. It measures 1 1/5 inches (3.05 cm) in length.
