Basically there are two ways to etching a metal plate:
1.Physically: to scratch out directly in the plate with instruments as dry point, burin, rocker (Mezzotint) etc (Intaglio process, Engraving). The produced line is velvety, is not completely defined.
Look: https://www.etsy.com/listing/85187013/original-aquatint-mezzotint-kings-canyon

2. Chemically: Through fine layer of ground, composed of waxes, gums and resins, draws the plate with a metal point (the 'etching needle'), which exposes the metal. The plate is then immersed in a bath of acid, which bites into the plate through the exposed lines. The depth of the line, and thus its darkness when printed, is determined by the length of time the plate remains in the bath and the strength of the acid solution. (Etching process). The produced line is sharp, well defined.

I usually mix two or more techniques to make a printmaking.

The inked plate with the uncut areas wiped clean, is placed in a roller press operated under considerable pressure to force the paper into the incisions to take up the ink. It is this pressure that leaves the plate mark on the paper.

All limited edition etching/intaglio is produced individually on my own hand press.
Each pressing produces a slightly different image, so all the prints are in effect originals.
