Tim and Tip, or The Adventures of a Boy and a Dog by James Otis. Illustrated by W.A. Rogers. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1883. First Edition. 16mo. (6.5” x 5”). 179 pp, with 6 pages of ads, Table of Contents, and List of Illustrations. Frontispiece and 12 additional full-page, black & white illustrations. Sage green cloth hardcover with black and gold-toned decoration on spine and front cover. Light sage floral endpapers.

Fair-Good condition (cover soil as evident in the photo; rub at spine and corner tips; loose frontispiece page; binding stitching showing but still intact; foxing, especially on first few pages, and some finger-smudging in contents; one inch closed tear on one plate). Previous owner’s signature (Fletcher Harper, Jr.) in blue ink on verso of frontispiece. Old sticker of South Australian crest on front paste down.

Journalist James Otis Kaler’s second book under the pen name James Otis, after Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus (1880). Includes charming illustrations by W.A. Rogers, renowned nineteenth-century political cartoonist for Harper’s Weekly, The New York Herald, and Life Magazine. Given the date of publication, the Fletcher Harper Jr. of the signature found in the book is likely the great-grandson of the original Fletcher Harper (1806-1877), co-founder of the Harper Brothers printing and publishing firm in New York. From the obituary of young Fletcher's grandfather (1828-1890): “Before the death of the first Fletcher Harper in 1877, there was a Fletcher Harper in each of four generations of his branch of the family. Of these the youngest alone is now left….”

Scarce in good condition because of its immense popularity among young boys in the late nineteenth century, this volume is made unique by the youthful Harper signature.
